The Third Annual Nimishillen Creek
LEAP was the most successful clean-up to date! Despite
being delayed over a month due to heavy rains in September,
this years LEAP drew over 45 volunteers from Stark and
Summit Counties to help pick up trash in and along Nimishillen
Creek just south of downtown Canton.
The Nimishillen Creek Watershed
Partners organized this year's event at the same locations,
Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium and Esmont Park, because
volunteers were unable to get into the Creek last year due to
high water. Over 3 industrial trash bins (dumpsters)
were filled with all kinds of litter including bicycles, a
refrigerator door, bottle, automobile gas tank, metal culvert pipes, and more.
Also pulled out were some 25 tires of all variety.
After over 2 hours of hard work, the volunteers were treated
to a free lunch compliments of Subway.
Besides clean-up volunteers, the 2004
Nimishillen Creek LEAP also had tremendous support from local
agencies and businesses. The
Watershed Partners
were able to hold such a successful event thanks largely to
the support from LEAP sponsors.
These sponsors, listed at the bottom
of the page, covered all the event costs including
equipment and supplies like dumpsters, trash hauling, rakes,
shovels, gloves, trash bags, food and beverage. Thank
You!
