Welcome To The Middle Cuyahoga River Website

What's New: Upcoming Meetings, River Clean-Up, and Summer 2009 Newsletter

Welcome to a Work in Progress!!
Just like the Middle Cuyahoga River and its watershed, the website, the logo, and the group of people collaborating to take care of the watershed are all evolving.

We welcome the participation and suggestions of others interested in shaping the way we manage, improve, and protect the middle Cuyahoga River, its streams, and watershed.  Please contact Maia Peck, Middle Cuyahoga River Watershed Coordinator, at NEFCO, 330-252-0337, mpeck@nefcoplanning.org.

The Watershed

The Middle Cuyahoga watershed is a part of the Cuyahoga River watershed in northeast Ohio and drains to Lake Erie.  The Middle Cuyahoga watershed extends between Hartville (Stark County), the Lake Rockwell dam in Kent (Portage County), and the Gorge Dam in Cuyahoga Falls (Summit County).  The 135-square mile watershed includes farms, woods, developing land, and cities, each of which affects water quality and quantity.  Click for images of the watershed or to learn more about watersheds.

The removal of two dams along the Middle Cuyahoga at Kent and Munroe Falls restored natural flow along 6 miles of the river, allowing much of the river to completely or nearly attain water quality standards.   Representatives from watershed communities and organizations are working together with the Middle Cuyahoga River Watershed Coordinator to protect the progress that has been made and to help determine how best to manage, improve, and protect the Middle Cuyahoga River, its tributaries, and watershed over time.  The tasks of these collaborators include:

  •      Develop a state-endorsed Watershed Action Plan by December, 2010;

  •      Determine and appropriate structure for the long-term management of the Middle Cuyahoga River and its watershed;

  •      Support watershed management efforts by watershed communities and organization; and

  •      Start implementing good watershed management practices in a cooperative way to address issues of water quality and quantity
