Watershed Coordinator
What is a Watershed Coordinator?
A Watershed Coordinator is a person responsible for organizing
watershed planning, education, and implementation for the
protection and restoration of local water resources. This
challenging task is accomplished by networking with agencies,
organizations and citizens to develop effective watershed
management plans and sustained long-term local efforts aimed
at yielding clean lakes, rivers and streams. Benefits of
watershed planning can include improved surface and ground
water quality, reduced risk of flooding, enhanced recreation
potential, and improved community health.
Who is the Upper Tuscarawas River Watershed Coordinator?
Eric Akin is the Upper Tuscarawas River Watershed Coordinator.
Eric received a Masters of Environmental Science concentrating
in water resources from Indiana University, and a B.A. from
Wittenberg University where he majored in biology and minored
in geology. Eric’s past duties include coordinating
two volunteer lake monitoring programs and managing a non-point
pollution reduction grant in the Wolf Creek watershed (Summit
and Medina Counties).
Who does the Watershed Coordinator work for?
The Watershed Coordinator is funded through a six-year
Watershed
Coordinator Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
(ODNR); however, the Coordinator works for the Northeast
Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization
(NEFCO), the grant sponsor. The grant will continue until
October 2007.

The ODNR grant allows the Watershed Coordinator to work
with stakeholders in the Upper Tuscarawas River,
Nimishillen
Creek, and Chippewa Creek

pollution reduction activities like environmental education,
stream clean-ups, septic system repairs and replacements,
